Advocate for the proactive inclusion of people with disabilities in climate change efforts, building upon their lived experiences to inform appropriate approaches and strategies for their inclusion in climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts.
As we have observed, vulnerable groups are disproportionately affected by climate change. Yet, these groups remain excluded from urban development processes and climate efforts. For the past three years, we have shifted our focus from government-centered approaches to directly engaging with vulnerable groups themselves asking whether they might be the most effective at modelling a better approach for their engagement in climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.
Goal: Map and define the levels of engagement for people with disabilities as champions in climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.
Strategies
Launch targeted community workshops to introduce participants to structured listening methods, and teach them how to name and frame issues for public deliberation.
Publish periodic case reports and opinion articles that communicate stories of agency and involvement of people with disabilities in climate change efforts.
Conduct social media campaigns aimed at influencing governments and stakeholders’ decisions to prioritize inclusivity by funding inclusive initiatives in climate change efforts.
